Madekwe was raised in a mixed ethnic family. The father of her is Nigerian and Swiss as well as the mother of her is English. She was lived in a housing estate run by the council south of London. When she was 14she enrolled in The Brit School. She earned her BA in acting from the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art. At school, she was a part-time actor in numerous stage plays, like King Henry V's Princess Katherine as well as Wuthering Heights.

Madekwe officially made her US debut with The Beautiful Life in 2009. The series aired only two episodes at The CW, and was later removed from the air. Ashley Leggat is a Gemini-nominated actress, who was born into an extended family. She was born to Patty and Roy Leggat. Her parents were Roy and Patty along with her older brothers -Rob, Brett, and twins Todd and Bram. Ashley's four brothers, all very active, took part in hockey in the winter months and played baseball in the summers, meaning they grew up mostly in parks and arenas. Ashley couldn't walk, however she could dance. In the end, when she turned 2, she discovered Baby Ballet. Ashley began to be a dancer immediately after that. Until she graduated from High School, Ashley danced competitively in the highest divisions of tap, jazz, ballet, pointe, acrobatics, lyrical, musical theatre and hip hop. Ashley was awarded the top soloist award at every major dance competition, including International Dance Challenge, Showstoppers, 56-7-8 Showtime, Flash Dance, Dance, Dance, Dance among a few.
